Here are some basic ideas on how to pick long shots. (or at least how I've picked some)

1. If there is a horse that is NOT the fav. but has more money to show than the fav. bet that horse.
2. If a horse is moving for dirt to turf OR is moving from Turf to dirt.
3. If the horse came second and gaining in it's last race and is going longer in this race bet that horse.
4. If the horse is dropping in class and is NOT the fav. you MIGHT want to bet that horse.
5. If one of the best jockeys in on a horse that is 5- 1 or better you might want to bet that horse.
6. If a horse that is moving from one track to another and is usually low odds but has higher odds at the new tack , bet that horse.
7. If a horse is grey, Irish and is running on the grass - bet that horse (just a personal thing - it has worked)
8. If its a long race AND there is one jockey that weighs 5 or more lbs. LESS that any other jockey - bet that horse.
9. If the race has 6 of less horses in it just bet the longest shot to WIN/PLACE (you'd be surprised how many times the long shot comes in)
10. If you're name is in the horses name OR it reminds you of something coincidental or just triggers (sorry for the pun - no I'm not) something in your mind - Bet that horse.


Remember, more times than not, if you change you bet, the first be will come in. If you want to be safe and the odds are good enough just make an additional bet - you'll kick yourself LESS in the ass that way. AND DON'T change your mind at the last minute at the teller window.
